Toronto Centre International Program for Securities Regulators

New Frontiers in Regulation and Supervision: Keeping Regulation and Supervision in Step with Innovat

Sunday, July 8, 2018 - Friday, July 13, 2018

Program Overview

Technological innovations are transforming the financial services industry. The rapid development of digital finance has brought about opportunities for financial inclusion whilst also creating challenges for regulation and supervision of capital markets. It is important that regulators and supervisors assess the adequacy of their current regulatory frameworks to timely and appropriately respond to these innovations and mitigate new sources of risks. We are also facing a unique opportunity to cultivate these innovations to engage new market participants and foster economic growth and development.

This program will provide participants with the tools to face these challenges successfully, and thrive in a constantly evolving financial system. Throughout the program, participants will learn from leading supervisory and regulatory agencies on the tools and mechanisms implemented in dealing with the challenges posed by FinTech in capital markets. The experiences shared will provide fruitful insights into potentially new and emerging regulatory engagement models, and will allow participants to discuss issues and compare best practices with their international counterparts.

Participants will also hear from experts and regulators across different jurisdictions who will illustrate inventive approaches to dealing with the root causes of financial crises.  Each training session will be highly practical and interactive, incorporating the use of panel discussions, group activities, and a crisis simulation exercise to reinforce learning.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of this five-day course, participants will better understand how to:

  • Manage potential micro and macro financial risks posed by the rapid development of FinTech in capital markets
  • Develop the regulatory perimeters necessary to respond to technological innovations
  • Implement a crisis intervention framework to support timely and effective decision-making across relevant authorities
